Quick Facts About Boater Safety

In order to understand the laws and regulations placed on boaters, you need to hear some of the cold hard facts about death, injury, and damage caused by unsafe and unlawful practices on the water. The information shared below comes directly from a May 2018 Press Release submitted by the United States Coast Guard. The information was gathered in 2017.

  • 4,291 accidents were reported
  • 658 deaths occurred as a result of those accidents
  • 2,629 injuries occurred as a result of those accidents
  • 76% of fatal boating accident victims drowned
  • 5% of victims that drowned were not wearing a life jacket
  • Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents
  • 81% of deaths occurred on boats where the operator did not receive boater safety instruction
  • Only 14% of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator received a nationally-approved boating safety education certificate
  • Property damage costs exceeded 46 million dollars

These are just a few of the facts available from the U.S. Coast Guard regarding boating safety. It isn’t hard to see some of the most vital things you need to do to be a more responsible boater.

Critical Tips for Staying Safe While Boating

The U.S. Coast Guard has five specific tips to follow to keep yourself and others safe while out on the water.

  1. Wear a life jacket-Federal law requires children under the age of 13 to wear a USCG approved life jacket while underway in an open vessel on federally controlled waters; however, ALL persons on your vessel should wear a life jacket at all times.

“I ask those who boat to continue to do so responsibly, especially by donning a life jacket,” said Capt. Scott Johnson, chief of the Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety at Coast Guard Headquarters. “Wearing a life jacket is the single most important thing you can do to save your life or the life of someone you care about.”

  1. Take a boating safety course- The U.S. Coast Guard recommends checking with the Boat U.S. Foundation for boater safety courses in your state.
  2. Attach the engine shut-off switch to your vessel-The ‘kill-switch’ cuts the motor in the event of the operator being thrown from the helm. Read more about kill cords here.
  3. Get a free vessel safety check-Once you pass the vessel safety check; you will be given a decal that informs the U.S. Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, Local Police, & other Law Enforcement Agencies that your boat is in full compliance with all laws for the year. 4. Boat sober-Finally, and most obviously, do not drink and operate your vessel under any circumstances.

Following these few simple tips will offer you peace of mind as the operator of your boat. Insisting that your High-Quality Marine Glass guests to wear a life jacket will show them just how much you care about their safety. It is your responsibility to know the laws and regulations in your state and follow them carefully.
